GWS’s reserve grade team will play their North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) clash with Eastlake on Saturday at Robertson Oval in Wagga.
As part of a big day of football, the Giants will play as a curtain raiser to the Farrer League clash between East Wagga-Kooringal and Northern Jets.
Temora’s Jake Barrett is one Riverina footballer likely to be part of the Giants’ reserves and he has had the game pencilled in on the calendar for some time.
“I’ve definitely been looking forward to this game for a while,” Barrett said.
“It’s always good to get back home.
“I’ve got a good mate, Jack Fisher, playing for the Jets in the game after so it’s always good to get back and catch up with mates.
“I’m looking forward to having a good time.”
Also expected to be among the contingent of Riverina Giants are Leeton’s Jacob Townsend and Culcairn’s Jeremy Finlayson.
Narrandera’s Zac Williams has been playing AFL, and suffered hamstring tightness last weekend, while Sam Schulz is likely to miss with a shoulder injury.
In a boost for Riverina AFL fans, imposing GWS forward Jon Patton is a big chance of playing in Wagga as he continues his comeback from a knee injury.
While happy to be playing in Wagga, Barrett is desperate for a chance at AFL level.
The 19-year-old has been in red-hot form this season.
He had 32 possessions in the win over Brisbane Lions’ reserves last weekend, and a month ago, he racked up 43 possessions and 10 tackles.
He was emergency for the Giants’ clash with North Melbourne in round 12.
Barrett is happy with his form but said positions in GWS’ first grade midfield are tough to get at the moment.
“Obviously I talk to a few of the coaches now and then and I’ve just got to keep at it,” he said.
“I’ve got to keep working on things.
“We’ve got a good midfield at the moment with no injuries so it’s tough.
“I’ll just keep at it and hope for the best.”
The Giants will play at midday on Saturday, as part of an EWK home game at Robertson Oval.
