Dougary Girl ($12.00) raced up on the speed and proved too tough for her opposition to take out the Corowa Race Club Benchmark 55 Handicap (1300m).
Ridden by Mick Travers, Dougary Girl was there to be passed in the straight but fought on strongly to score by 1¼ lengths from Spinifex Gypsy ($16.00) and the fast-finishing Imperious ($4.20).
It was the mare’s first win since April 2014 and proved worth the wait for Wagga trainer Doug Vickers and owner Scott Cox.
Meantime, the Southern District trainer’s premiership remained unchanged after the Corowa meeting as both Trevor Sutherland and Chris Heywood went winless.
Sutherland leads Heywood by one.
Nick Souquet, John Kissick and Simon Miller all rode winners in the race for the jockey’s title.
