The breast cancer fundraiser took place at McPherson Oval on Saturday without the Riverina Lions, who had hoped to play against the ADFA/RMC Ewes at 11am.
“It’s very disappointing that we couldn’t be part of our breast cancer fundraising day because of the forfeit,” Lions coach Dan Lloyd said.
The ADFA/RMC Ewes, based in Canberra, have missed a number of Wagga-based games in recent years, having made the journey just once in three years.
The forfeit has a bearing on the Lions’ percentage tally; ADFA/RMC Ewes are positioned last in the AFL Canberra competition and the Lions were anticipating a win by a considerable margin.
Eager to sustain the team’s match fitness, Lloyd led a training run at 7am on Saturday.
“We’ve gotta keep fitness levels up, need to keep up with the top teams in the competition,” he said.
