Hughes hasn’t driven since 1997, but will steer Electric Mary in the Wagga TAB Ladyship Pace days after getting his licence back.
Temora born and raised, the 47-year-old returned to the Riverina after 18 years on the North Coast looking to get back into harness racing.
“I’d always wanted to and that’s why I came home now,” Hughes said.
“If I had of stayed on the coast for another 10 years and didn’t do it, I’d kick myself for not doing it.”
Now based at Leeton, he’s already had training success with Devil Dust but wanted to get back into the driving aspect of the sport.
He wanted his first drive to be on Devil Dust but will have to wait for later on the seven-race card after the gelding needed a claim.
The mare is was the second addition to his stable and will be searching for her first win at start six.
After finishing second in her first race for Hughes at Young last month, Hughes is looking to use her good gate speed.
“She’s drawn good in the one and has really good gate speed and will lead so she’ll be thereabouts,” he said.
