NAIDOC week
TO CELEBRATE NAIDOC week the museum welcomes special guest Hewitt Whyman to share his military and community experiences.
This talk – Serving Country, Serving Community – will take place at 11am to noon on Friday, July 10, at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site.
Hewitt will provide a first hand account of serving country to support the museum’s current exhibition Bumalduhaany Fighter Warrior – Remembering our Aboriginal soldiers.
Hewitt is a Vietnam veteran who has lived in Wagga since 1974.
He has been married to his wife Dorothy for 46 years and has four children and 12 grandchildren.
Hewitt has worked actively in the community for 46 years on Aboriginal affairs and the collective reconciliation goals which NAIDOC week celebrates.
He will discuss service from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective and expand ideas on and ways in which we can all collectively serve country and remember the Anzacs.
Please RSVP the museum on 6926 9655 or museum@wagga.nsw.gov.au if you would like to attend Hewitt’s presentation.
There will be light refreshments served and lots of opportunity to ask questions.
Bumalduhaany Fighter Warrior
ON DISPLAY at the Historic Council Chambers site, the exhibition Bumalduhaany Fighter Warrior – Remembering our Aboriginal soldiers tells the stories of the Wiradjuri soldiers who, compelled by dual loyalties fought for Australian freedom and acted as responsible men of their traditional nations, out of duty to protect their families and their people’s country.
Bumalduhaany Fighter Warrior was curated by Aunty Flo Grant and will be on display until Sunday, July 19.
For all of those people who have been admiring the paper sculptures in the museum’s current exhibition Writtenworlds - handwritten local histories there will be a how-to workshop on Saturday, July 25 from 2pm to 3pm at the Museum of the Riverina’s, Historic Council Chambers site.
Tricia Harrison, a local Wagga artist and designer will lead this workshop for adults.
The Art of Paper Folding is inspired by the exhibition Writtenworlds: handwritten local histories on display until Sunday, August 2.
This exhibition features fragile letters, memoirs and postcards spanning two centuries, from museum collections across the region.
Tricia's intricate paper sculptures have brought the Writtenworlds exhibition to life, and now you can learn how to make your own beautiful and inspiring folded paper sculptures.
A small booklet will be provided to make your own folded book sculpture or bring your own old books you no longer want.
Please RSVP the museum on 6926 9655 or museum@wagga.nsw.gov.au.
