Sutherland scored an early race-to-race double at Murrumbidgee Turf Club on Saturday with Izzy Squizzy ($16.00) and Paravidya ($4.40) both breaking through for maiden wins.
The double puts Sutherland on 23 wins and three clear of fellow Wagga trainer Chris Heywood (20) with two months remaining.
Albury trainer Brett Cavanough is still within striking distance on 18.5, then a gap to Canberra’s Matt Dale (15)..
Experienced Wagga jockey Bryan Murphy guided both of Sutherland’s horses home to also enjoy a winning double on Saturday.
Izzy Squizzy held off Little Miss Chelsy ($8.00) to take out the Estella Rise Maiden Plate (1600m).
Murphy produced a gem on Paravidya, never leaving the fence to score comfortably in the Kurrajong Waratah Raceday Committee Maiden Handicap (1200m).
