An estimated 200 people attended the Turvey Park fire station open day on Saturday, with firefighters showing off the latest equipment designed to keep the community safe.
Mr McDonnell said a sense of altruism was replicated with the “thousands” of job applications the service receives every year.
“I think people realise it’s a worthwhile job,” Mr McDonnell said.
“It’s a great privilege to serve the community and add to that great image.”
The job continues to rank highly in the Most Trusted Professions survey.
