The Farrer League competition is its strongest in more than a decade and that transformed into the representative arena with a dominant display against Picola.
Farrer were too strong at the contest and ran riot across the ground on their way to a big win, 17.16 (118) to 8.14 (62).
It was an impressive display from an under-strength Farrer line-up and it could have been bigger if not for wasteful disposal and inaccuracy in front of goals, particularly in the first half.
Farrer’s big three forwards Matt Wallis, Marc Geppert and Matt Harpley were a constant threat, while midfielders, Sam Fisher, Chris Block, Mitch Carroll and Lachie Flagg enjoyed days out.
Farrer coach Jason McPherson was pleased to deliver the league a win in his first year in charge.
“Absolutey, not just me but the whole league,” McPherson said.
“The league has recruited well and done very well.
“I think the committee, the CMC, those are the guys that should be pleased because they’ve got so much passion for rep football.”
McPherson admitted he was somewhat surprised by the ease of Farrer’s win.
“I was pleasantly surprised, I was surprised how quickly they dropped off but in saying that, when they did get the ball and moved it, they looked pretty good,” McPherson said.
“I’m extremely happy, considering the injuries leading up and the calibre of players that were injured and couldn’t make the team.
“We won it out of the middle too easy I thought.
“It was just simply pressure. The boys were hard, head over the footy but they had to work hard because we turned it over too much and didn’t convert in the first half which really worried me.”
Others to shine in the win were ruckman Jeremy Luff, who shouldered the duties for most of the day.
Block, Fisher and Flagg all won plenty of the ball.
Fisher had four goals to half-time.
Ash Saunders was a standout at full-forward for Picola and finished with four goals.
