Since it was revealed last week by Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce and member for Riverina Michael McCormack, the proposed move has come under fire from a number of corners with concerns about the business case for such a move.
Mr Honner, however, believes the move would be a logical one for the GRDC.
“I think it probably makes a lot of sense to get it out to a region where it’s close to a university and the research,” he said.
“There’s no real advantage for it to be in Canberra – politicians are there only six months of the year.”
Mr McCormack moved last week to outline there would be no expensive lease breakage fees associated with the move – despite the GRDC being locked into a lease in its current inner Canberra offices until 2024.
