Homicide squad police detectives are overseeing the investigation into the death of the Heywood supporter, who died after watching his side’s 16-goal win against Westerns at the Heywood Recreation Reserve.
It’s alleged the 47-year-old was assaulted by another man just before 5.30pm and knocked unconscious.
Mr Bell is believed to have gone into cardiac arrest and died soon after.
It is understood the two men were known to each other.
Mr Bell’s brother Wayne Bell, 59, died of cancer in October last year. He was a much-valued member of Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service and received an Order of Australia medal in 2012 for his work in Aboriginal justice.
Wayne Bell’s daughter Inala died of an aneurysm the year before her father’s death. She would have been 30 years old this week.
Heywood Football Netball Club vice-president Tim Grey said yesterday the club’s thoughts and prayers were with the family.
“What happened was just tragic,” he said.
“We are all feeling for the Bell family.
“There is a police investigation going on so there will be no further comment.”
Mr Bell’s brother Michael is the president of the Heywood Football Netball Club.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said there were attempts to resuscitate Mr Bell until the MICA paramedics arrived at the Edgars Road ground at 5.36pm with three other ambulance units.
Paramedics continued to perform CPR but Mr Bell died at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Mark James, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, is leading the investigation the alleged assault and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Police yesterday held interviews with witnesses at the Heywood police station.
