The way light twinkled during the holiday season or played across the dry grass or hay inspired Mr Baxter.

“I was always interested in art and light since I was young,” he said.

He grew up in Wagga playing football for the Waratahs but left to forge a career as a light designer.

His latest venture has taken him to Milan, Italy with business partner Ruth McDermott, where their Nimbus pendant installation was featured at the Milan Furniture Fair, the Salone del Mobile.

Mr Baxter left Wagga and moved to London before teaching in and travelling to 50 countries and returning to study industrial design and illumination design.

He is one of the founding artists of Sydney festival, Vivid, which will be held again in three weeks.

He is currently working on a luminous canopy that moves in the wind and incorporates a sound element for the exhibition.

His pieces have been shown in Australia, Germany, New Zealand and now Milan.

Mr Baxter and Ms McDermott exhibited their Nimbus pendant, which features 50 LED nodes and can change colour and light effects.

“When you go to the Milan festival you want to try and link up with manufacturers and see how your work fairs against others in the world,” he said.

“You get a chance to be a part of what’s happening at the moment and see what’s being created internationally.

"Coming from Wagga, you never really think it's possible to go to the Milan Furniture Fair.

"As far as innovation with LEDs, I think we are doing some innovative stuff.”

Mr Baxter said their pieces gained interest from architects who saw something original in what they had created.

Mr Baxter still has familial ties in Wagga with his grandmothers and one of his brothers residing here.

His parents are former teachers at Turvey Park Public School.

His intention is to start a light festival in Wagga by the lagoon as a throwback to his early inspiration and because he thinks the location lends itself to some beautiful imagery.
