Raised from the proceeds of their fundraising at the Commercial Hotel, the Junee’s firefighters handed over $10,000.

“We thought it was a great cause and since it’s about helping prevent fires, we thought it was appropriate we support it,” deputy captain Peter Smith (ret’d) said.

Cooinda Court needs to raise a significant sum in order to retrofit fire sprinklers into the aged care facility.

The NSW state government mandated all aged care centres have fire sprinklers in the wake of the Quakers Hill nursing home fire in 2011.

Each aged care facility without fire sprinklers must now have them installed with no help from the government, it means Cooinda Court has to raise enough money to pay for it.

With the $10,000 donation it will bring Cooinda Court’s appeal fund to $75,000.

Cooinda Court committee member Andy Walker said it was a great effort that such an incredible amount had been raised by the community so far.

Mr Walker said the donation from Junee’s fire brigade was amazing.

“It’s a big boost to our funds, we’re really very appreciative,” Mr Walker said.

Mr Smith said it was thanks to the support of the Commercial Hotel that they had been able to raise the money.

“The Junee Fire Brigade Social Club wishes to express a big thank you to the Commercial Hotel for allowing us to run the joker poker raffle at their premises on a Friday night,” he said.

“This venture has been very successful and we wish to thank the people who support us.

“Thanks must go to the men who have worked tirelessly selling the numbers on each Friday night and on the various community activities for the past years,” Mr Smith said.

Commercial Hotel manager Helen McNamara said the establishment was happy to support the fire brigade's fundraiser.

“Every dollar raised goes back into the community.”
