With the Bulls camped on the Pickers’ try line McCarthy sliced through from 10 metres out before slotting the awkward conversion with a minute remaining to earn the draw.
It wasn’t last his last minute heroics that stood out with McCarthy playing his best game since returning to the Bulls this season.
In a topsy-turvy clash, where both teams led by 12 points at various stages, Southcity captain-coach Nick Skinner considering his team lucky to earn something from the game after giving up a 12-0 lead to start the match.
“We were lucky to even get one point in the end,” Skinner said.
“We didn’t do ourselves any favours at times and kept them in the game.
“We got out to a good lead then they got ahead of us and we kept shooting ourselves in the foot.”
A lapse in concentration midway through the first half hurt the Bulls who let in 18 points late in the second half to trail 18-12.
It’s one aspect Skinner looking to improve on before taking on Kangaroos on Saturday.
The first year coach is also looking to limit the amount of penalties they concede but is happy with the start to the season, undefeated through the first three rounds.
