Reece called me up at 1.30a.m. It was blowing a gale and bitterly cold. We took over the bridge at 1.45a.m. About 3a.m. it started to rain. It was not too bad in the bridgehouse but outside it nearly blew me over. Smith and Robins went to sleep and I kept watch for the whole of the shift until six. The Lutzen had to get up steam and shift as she was dragging her anchor and was too close to the shore. Two other ships had to change their anchorage. We were relieved at six by Reddin, Kerwan and Davis. It rained all the day until about five o’clock. We had a game of football afterwards with the M.Q. The ball was one of the ship’s fenders and weighed about 20lbs. We beat them by three to one.
