WOODEN golf sticks were back in vogue in Wagga on Sunday as 18 golfers celebrated a bygone era at the Wagga City Golf Club.

Golfing purists from across NSW and Victoria converged for an interstate challenge with a difference.
NSW dominated the Al Howard Memorial Trophy event, coming away the a 8-1 win.
The handicap matchplay event featured golfers with pre-1940 Hickory shafted clubs, dressed in plus four pants, shirts and ties.
Darron Watt is one of three Wagga golfers taking part in the event and said everyone was impressed with the course.
“They were very accomodating of Wagga as a location,” Watt said.
Fellow Wagga golfers Gerry Gerlach and Lachlan Wilson were also part of NSW’s winning team.
The tournament started in 2003 between The Australian Golf Heritage Society and the Golf Society of Australia, but Wagga’s event was the first since the death of Howard, one of the country’s leading golf course designers, last year. He was 100 years old.
