The Phantoms were held to a 18-all draw at Murrumbidgee College Ovals on Saturday after missing a number of chances to seal the win.
"We let it go basically,” Ward said.
“It was a game that either team could have won and the conditions were horrendous, but we pushed the pass on three or four occasions when we just should have took the ball to ground and recycled it as you don’t have to score off every phase.
“But it is only round two and the boys are pretty disappointed, as its a game they thought they should have won, but it’s just one of those things and you can’t take anything away from Wagga City as they turned up and played very, very well.”
James Moore had the chance to win the game late with a penalty goal attempt but couldn’t find the strike.
The Phantoms also lost new five-eighth Stuart Dyer early after he suffered a head injury and face laceration while Dennis Feagai went off with a knee injury.
