Galea fell from Imposing Vain in the Class B Handicap (1200m) at Tullibigeal.
He was transferred to Condobolin Hospital by road ambulance, where he was stabilised, then airlifted to Orange Hospital and then again to Westmead Hospital by air on Sunday morning.
Stewards reported on Sunday that he had escaped life threatening injuries, for the moment, and may not need prolonged ICU treatment.
He was knocked unconscious in the fall and also injured his left shoulder.
An inquiry into the fall has been opened but early observations suggest his saddle slipped.
