Social Services Minister Scott Morrison announced $210 million in funding may be available in 2017 for victims of homelessness and domestic violence.

If matched by state governments, the funding will be distributed to service providers determined by the state, and resources can then be allocated on the ground.

Member for Hume Angus Taylor has pledged to work with community groups in Cootamundra to combat domestic violence.

“I am aware that the incidence of domestic violence in Cootamundra and a number of surrounding communities is too high,” Mr Taylor said.

He has been compelled to shine a light on the number of domestic violence assaults being reported to police. 

“I will take up the case for more resources being needed to tackle the largely hidden issue of domestic violence, meeting shortly with service providers to discuss the needs of the Cootamundra community.

“Police tell me a great deal of their time is spent assisting victims of domestic violence and transporting perpetrators to and from court. 

“Service providers such as Mission Australia and Anglicare have told me that resources are stretched, more support is needed at the early intervention and prevention stages, and while more funding would be welcome, it’s not only an issue of more money. 

“A number of regulations also need to be changed to make it easier for victims to access existing support programs.”

Former domestic violence victim Sue Brown, who is looking to establish a support group in Cootamundra, was pleased to hear that local victims may have better access to support services.

“It’s an encouragement to hear that the government wants to make this a priority,” she said. 

Regardless of funding availability, community members such as Ms Brown, Cootamundra Soroptimist president Denise Clune and grievance counsellor Richard White will continue to support local victims.

“We will continue our quest for advocacy against domestic violence,” Mrs Clune said.
