Wagga’s Guinness World Record Attempt and Family Fun Day will be held on Easter Saturday to raise money for Future Hope – MS.
Organisers are encouraging as many people as possible to come to Bolton Park on April 4 to break the record for most number of people wearing a paper hat in a single venue.
The current record of 3045 was set in New Zealand but organiser Beck Hennessy said they are confident they can get 4000 people.
“Wagga has a very competitive spirit so we are hoping to draw on that,” she said.
“Based on the response so far, we are confident we will smash it.
“It’s something fun, it’s not taking anything too seriously and it’s easy to participate in.”
Miss Hennessy is a singer in Wagga Takes Two and supporter of Future Hope.
She formed a committee to organise the event.
The funds raised will be donated to Multiple Sclerosis patient Amanda Norman for an upcoming trip to Russia where she will receive stem cell treatment.
“When I go to Russia to receive treatment for my MS, I will come home completely bald,” she said.
“I’m going to need something to cover my head so a paper hat seemed to symbolise this perfectly.”
WIN News reporter Jared Constable has partnered with singer Shelley McCormack for Future Hope in Wagga Takes Two.
This is Mrs McCormack's fifth year performing in the charity event.
“It’s about doing what you love and raising money for much-needed charities,” she said.
Officials at Guinness World Records have been contacted and ground rules have been set.
All participants must be in one venue wearing a paper hat that covers their entire head for the record to count.
Cost is $2 for a hat and wrist band and stations will be set up to assist people to make their hats.
There will be live music, market stalls and food and drink vendors.
Festivities will run at Bolton Park from 10.30am to 3.30pm with the official count taking place at 2pm.
Numerous smaller novelty records will be available to break during the day, including the most Dominos stacked in 30 seconds.
Organisers are currently looking for volunteers, stall holders, musicians, food and drink vendors and sponsors.
