Two Wagga teams, contesting the men’s and women’s divisions, represented the city at the championships at the weekend.
The members of the dominate women's team are still coming to terms with the squad's success at the two-day championships, which brought together teams from Wagga, Griffith, Dubbo, Canberra and Bathurst.
Women's team captain Michelle Bourke revealed the determined local squad claimed a 10 point victory over heavily-favoured Dubbo in an exciting finish to the competition.
The memorable victory has put the squad on track to repeat its efforts in the state-wide competition last year.
Success in the upcoming four stages of the challenge will give the Wagga team an opportunity to qualify for the Country Challenge final – and a chance to compete against victorious teams from three other zones. "We actually made the finals last year," team member Sherry Bartlett said.
In the highly-competitive men's division, Wagga claimed third spot with 68 points behind Bathurst and Orange.
Wagga will now prepare to venture to Canberra on March 28 and 29 to contest the next challenge.
