During Sunday's' well-attended Concussion Management in Community Sporting Clubs forum, renowned Australian sports physician Dr Ryan Kohler and Wagga physiotherapists Matt Turnbull and Pat Ireland introduced participants to baseline testing.

Baseline testing is a preseason examination which involves balance and brain function testing and a discussion of concussion symptoms that may be present in an athlete's day to day life.

"Results from baseline tests can then be used, and compared, to a similar exam during the season when a concussion occurs," Turnbull said. “Baseline testing allows for clubs, trainers and health professionals to accurately manage an athlete’s return to sport.”

Farrer League club North Wagga is leading the way, with the proactive Saints committing to conducting baseline testing. “It is great to see a club being so progressive and determined to get on top of this issue,” Turnbull said.

“If other clubs and sporting associations in the region follow their lead, this would be the first regional area in Australia to implement this type of program.”

More than 110 people from all walks of life attended the forum, hosted by the Hume League Sports Trainers Association and Riverina Sports Trainers Association.
