Mother-of-two Jen Spain is pleading with the community to assist her as she prepares to walk 55 kilometres from Palm Beach to Balmoral to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation.
While walking long distances through sand and up hills might not appeal to everyone, Mrs Spain said there are other ways to help.
Mrs Spain’s husband’s cousins attended school with Fred Hollows’ daughters so the cause has always been prominent within the family.
Mrs Spain will be joined by a team of female family members as they make the massive coastal trek on March 6.
A total of 12 will form three teams of four to compete next week.
“It’s not something that is easy for me to do but it’s an accomplishment I’d like to achieve,” she said.
“I feel really excited.
“I went through a stage of anxiety but I’ll be alright.
“I’m determined, you just have to get through the day.
“My biggest fear is coming from Wagga and not having a lot of sand to train in.”
Mrs Spain has been physically preparing since November by taking long walks on weekends and hill sprints for uphill fitness.
The longest walk she has embarked on has been 30 kilometres that took almost four-and-a-half hours.
Mrs Spain plays sport to keep fit but said this has taken her to a new level of training.
Mrs Spain’s team name is Waratah Warriors, after one of the family’s properties, and they intend to complete the walk in less than 10 hours.
She believes that being involved in a physical activity to raise money for a charity gives you a sense of accountability.
“It really provides you with a meaning to help the charity,” she said.
“It gives you the sense that you are helping rather than just fund-raising.
“These types of challenges are something you wouldn’t do otherwise.”
Mrs Spain’s team has already raised almost $2000.
Wagga residents can support Mrs Spain by donating by visiting www.coastrek.com.au. and searching for Jenny Spain or Waratah Warriors.
