WEST Wyalong young gun Ben Cattle enhanced his reputation as one of the sport's rising stars with victory in the Ganmain Public School P&F triathlon on Sunday.
Cattle, 14, upstaged older and more experienced opponents to take out the event for the first time.
It backed up his breakthrough victory at Wagga last month and gives him victory in the first two legs of the Riverina Tri Series.
Also completing the Wagga-Ganmain double was Albury triathlete Julie Gollan-Foard, who took out the women's event.
Cattle edged out fellow West Wyalong triathlete Angus Westaway by 31 seconds to give town the winning quinella.
Temora's Peter Harper finished in third position.
Gollan-Foard finished over a minute in front of Tumut teenager Abby Tozer in the women's division, with Temora's Nicola Curry another minute back in third.
Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong Football Netball Club's Team Rankin, consisting of Daniel Rankin, Luke Walsh and Renee Lucas, took out the team event.
Record numbers took part in the Ganmain triathlon with 234 competitors in the individual divisions, plus those who took part in teams.
Ganmain triathlon official Kylie Hamblin could not have been happier with how the event went.
"It was a very successful day," Hamblin said.
"It was perfect conditions and fantastic numbers."
Competitors in the open event started with one kilometre run, then a 20 kilometre cycle.
It was then to the Ganmain pool for a 150 metre swim, before finishing with a five kilometre run.
Cattle completed the course in 59 minutes and 27 seconds.
In a remarkable improvement, Cattle finished 23rd at last year's triathlon in a time of one hour, 10 minutes and 21 seconds.
The course this year had been made even longer, adding to his rapid improvement in the space of 12 months.
Golland-Foard won in a time of one hour, five minutes and 15 seconds.
The Riverina tri series will continue with Temora Rams' triathlon next Sunday
