A DISLIKE for the club's current position is the motivation behind Ash Weldon's decision to step up and take the top job at Charles Sturt University.
The coaching positions at all 18 AFL Riverina senior clubs are now occupied after CSU announced Weldon as its new senior coach for this year.
Bushpigs officials sounded out close to 100 prospective candidates from across the country and was quickly running out of time before Weldon agreed to take on the promotion on Thursday, just 10 weeks out from round one.
Weldon has been involved with the Bushpigs for the past two years and will take on a non-playing senior coach role.
CSU failed to win a game last season but Weldon is excited by the opportunity in front of him.
"The challenge is there, which is exciting," Weldon said.
"I've been around the club the last couple of years and I don't like where it's sitting so I decided to help it out a bit more.
"I was helping look for a coach but then they put it to me and I thought why not."
Weldon has played some games with the club over the last two years but a prolapsed disc in his back has forced him into an early retirement.
The appointment is an early birthday present for Weldon, who turns 24 on Saturday.
An Echuca junior, Weldon has plenty of football experience with stints in the Murray and Picola Leagues.
Weldon's goal is to simply improve the Bushpigs.
"The goal is obviously just improvement," he said.
"I want to get more blokes to the club, more to training and get the club going the right way.
"It will be back to basics really, I want to see the players learn a bit, get some structure to our game and improve skills."
Weldon, in his final year of an ag business management degree, will be back in Wagga on Monday to take charge of CSU training on Tuesday night at Peter Hastie Oval.
