WAGGA water polo starlet Kate Gallagher has played a crucial role in helping the Bidgeegators to a milestone victory at the NSW Country Clubs Championships in Newcastle.
Under the guidance of respected coach Dave Barrett, the Wagga Water Polo Inc representative team won through to the grand final of the high-calibre competition in impressive fashion.
Competing in the women's division B against Central Newcastle, Raymond Terrace and Central Coast powerhouse Woy Woy, the Bidgeegators never lost a game on their way to taking home gold.
Barrett was thrilled with his young team's success at the carnival, praising the girls for the determination, skill and athleticism they displayed against their accomplished rivals.
"The girls conducted themselves excellently both in and out of the pool all weekend," he declared proudly.
"The girls were wonderful representatives for the sport of water polo and for Wagga.
"But, it was their defence against the older and more experienced teams that was most impressive. No teams scored more than four goals against us in any game."
The talented young team enjoyed convincing wins on their way to the gold medal showdown with Woy Woy on Monday.
In a strong demonstration of the team's camaraderie and ability under pressure, the Bigdeegators lifted in the grand final to amass nine goals in the decider.
The team defeated Woy Woy five goals to two on the first day of the three day competition.
"The girls beat the Woy Woy Wombats nine to three in the gold medal match," Barrett said.
Decorated representative talent Gallagher stood-out for the team, with her outstanding display earning her the prestigious Most Valuable Player honour.
"Kate was not only voted the tournament MVP by the referees, but also achieved the highest goal scorer with 12 goals," Barrett revealed.
