WAGGA is home to a new state champion, after Greg Williams claimed the NSW paper tiger championship at the Australia Day long weekend.

Williams cruised to victory on Monday, having secured his fourth state title before the last of the seven races got under way.

It was a Williams quinella, with his father Garry scoring enough points to finish second.

Defending champion Rowan Nichol finished fourth, narrowly missing out on making an all Wagga podium.

It was Williams' fourth state crown, to go alongside two national titles won in 2006 and 2007.

Williams hasn't won a state paper tiger title since 2011 and after a number of years in a different class, was happy to be back on top.

"I've had a couple of years away from sailing this class of boat and was sailing laser for a few years and I've just come back," Williams said.

"I came seventh at the national titles recently and everything has started to gel back together after a bit of time in the water at the nationals.

"You have to have time on the water to get used to it again and get a feel for the boat."

His seventh-place finish in the nationals in Tasmania earlier this month also qualifies Williams for the Australian team which will tackle New Zealand in April.

Heavy winds meant only one race could be completed on Saturday.

Five races had to be completed on the Sunday, but Williams was comfortable with the heavy workload.

Williams won four and finished second in the other three, but only his best six scores counted.

With an unassailable lead finding into the final race on Monday, Williams had plenty of time to soak up his victory.

"I ended up coming second in the last race, but it wasn't a pressure situation and to be honest I didn't even have to put the boat on the water," Williams said.

"I would have still won."
