As part of the popular Destination NSW Home Ground Cricket Tour, two teams comprising players from all Wagga District Cricket Association clubs battled for 20/20 supremacy in front of a healthy crowd.
The Young Guns, captain by talented teenage batsman Jack Harper, was made up of players under 19 years of age, while the All Stars boasted some of the association’s best known faces.
“It was a really great concept,” NSW Cricket development officer Luke Olsen said.
“Both teams were made up of first and second grade player from Wagga clubs.
“Every club was represented in the game.
“It was good because it put the younger guys up against an opens team.”
Young Guns opened the batting, with 16-year-old Harper leading the way for the talented team.
“The Young Guns managed 116 (runs) off 20 overs and they finished seven for 116,” Olsen said.
“Jack Harper was the top run scorer with 60.”
In front of visiting former Australian cricket Nathan Bracken, Harper had an outstanding innings that was highlighted by a staggering five sixes.
“He got half his score in sixes which is very good,” Olsen said.
“He had a great game.”
South Wagga’s Jake Hindmarsh also put on impressive display for the Young Guns, taking two wickets for just seven runs.
“For 20/20 that is pretty good,” Olsen said.
Despite the pair’s best efforts, the All Stars were too strong.
“They got the runs with just three wickets down and five overs to spare,” Olsen said.
“They ended up three for 121 off 15 overs.”
St Michaels star Jordan Lawrence got the team off to a blistering star, smashing four sixes on his way to a run total of 64.
“Todd Henderson also batted well to finish with 26 no out,” Olsen said.
“Brad Yeomans was the team’s best bowler with one for 14 off
three overs.”
Olsen was pleased with the success of the 20/20 clash, which he said attracted a “decent crowd” against the odds.
“Given it was Australia Day and there was heaps going on, it was well-supported,” he said.
“It was a really great afternoon.”
