WANTABADGERY'S Cody Angland has returned home from the Australian Bushmen's Campdrafting Association (ABCRA) national finals rodeo in Tamworth with a swag of prizes.

The in-form saddle bronc and bareback competitor won the national finals average in his two chosen events in a perfect warm up for his international campaign.

This week, Mr Angland, 29, flies to the US to undertake a gruelling campaign to compete in some of the world's richest rodeos including the coveted $1 million American.

The American, now in its second year, attracts the cream of competitors with the ultimate winner earning $1 million in prize money.

It won't be the first time he has taken on the rigorous Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) circuit.

He has made it extremely close to qualifying for the national finals rodeo in Las Vegas on a couple of times but was hampered by injuries.

"I think I can do it, I am fitter and feeling better than ever and my mind is right, I feel like everything is going to go the right way," Angland said.

Meanwhile, the Tamworth finals provided an ideal stage to set the scene before flying out of Australia.

Mr Angland won the first round of the saddle bronc ride, was third in the second round and won the third round.

He won all three rounds of the bareback.

"That's what I was hoping to do, I plan to win every time I go," he said.

A successful run over Christmas and the New Year has also set him up to compete at the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) finals later this year.

Mr Angland is not taking the US campaign lightly and anticipates that he could enter up to 100 PRCA and Pro Rough Stock Series events by the end of the year.

Mr Angland was born into a rodeo family and his father Phil competed in bronc riding events.

In fact, his dad is one of his mentors and teachers and continually encourages him in the sport.

Mr Angland's brother Rhys, is also an accomplished rodeo competitor and Tye Angland is a successful jockey and rode in the Melbourne Cup last year.

"We are all really close and we support each other and that helps," he said.

Mr Angland said he was excited about his prospects on the US circuit but conceded it was different to riding in Australia.

"Over there you are by yourself you don't have that family support," he said.

"Home is always home," he said.
