That’s probably because I generally behave myself, at least when it comes to breaking the law.
Unfortunately, people who are tasered generally deserve it.
Usually, they have well and truly defied police instructions, so therefore they have placed themselves in a vulnerable position.
Then when a tragedy occurs there’s an outcry.
But why?
Quite obviously no one wants to see anyone die as a result of being tasered, but surely the victims only have themselves to blame.
Why on earth would anyone place themselves at such risk?
The 38-year-old who died at Bowral last week had been on a three-day drug-induced binge.
Well, I’m sorry, but whose fault is that?
Certainly not the police.
But, as always happens in times of trouble, it’s the police who are called in to try and resolve what often is a volatile situation.
In this case the victim was being disruptive and troublesome at the local McDonald’s restaurant.
Officers at first used capsicum spray and when that failed they were forced to draw a taser.
So why all of a sudden are the police to blame? Had this man behaved himself he
would be alive today.
Even his brother admitted he had problems all his life, had taken drugs and had mixed with the wrong crowd.
For goodness sake, what about some self-responsibility here?
It’s the same with the Brazilian student who died in similar circumstances in Sydney a few years ago.
After stealing from a local supermarket he then ran amok through the streets and as the CCTV footage clearly shows he repeatedly refused to stop.
Again, the incident ended tragically, but he would have been fine had he simply obeyed orders.
And while we are at it, we should spare a thought for the police in all this.
Imagine going to work in the morning and coming home that night having killed someone.
Talk about trauma.
Car chases are the same.
If my car is stolen I would want the police to do something about it.
I’ve worked hard for it and to have someone just up and steal it would anger me no end.
Imagine how annoyed I’d be if the police admitted to seeing it being driven around but failed to act.
As usual, if a chase ends badly there’s a hue and cry.
Well, we just can’t have it both ways.
Either we want the police to act or we don’t, but at least I know where I stand – stop the criminals and we’ll stop the rot.
