SEEING starter Justcallme Kayjay debut during the second heat of the MIA Breeders Plate tonight is just what the doctor ordered for owner Kerry Menz.
Menz is fighting cancer and has travelled from Queensland for the chance to see his namesake race for the first time.
Unsure of just how many times Menz will be able to see the son of Dawn Ofa New Day gelding, his brother Peter Menz always had the Leeton feature in mind.
"I decided to put him in there thinking we could Kerry here," Peter said.
Drawn outside hot favourite Bettermatch, Peter doesn't give the Justcallme Kayjay much hope but is happy to have his first runner in the $25,000 race.
"We've got no chance against Thomas' horse - he's run 1:55," he said.
With the draw Peter, who will drive the gelding as well, is looking to go forward in hope of finding a nice position from barrier five.
The gelding has been to the trials four times and has finished third on three occasions.
He faced two of his rivals in the series, Our Red Jack and Impertinent Boy, in his first trial at Coolamon last month and thought Ray Walker's colt would be the horse to beat until Bettermatch and Regal Nightshade were unveiled.
Still the experienced trainer is happy with how the gelding is progressing.
"My bloke will go alright, he can go along but I don't think he can go with them," Peter said.
"They can go 1:55 and he can run 2:04."
His last trial at Coolamon a third place finish between Lettuce Go Pippa and How Bigs That, but neither are running at Leeton.
