The young man, who is too frightened to be named, was at home on Sunday when his door was forced open by a knife-wielding bandit.
He has lived in the house for three years and said it had been broken into multiple times.
Fed up with living in fear, he is now leaving the area.
"I'm moving out next week," he said.
"I am sick of having all my stuff stolen."
A woman who recently moved to the area with her family said she cannot wait for her lease to end.
She was too frightened to be named as well but said she feels "gutted" for the guy.
"It's really frightening, I'm shaken up myself," she said.
The woman and her family have been victims of random violent acts in the short time they have lived in Bruce Street.
"We had a rock thrown through the window," she said.
She said the young victim's arms and legs were tied up.
"He was in the laundry they took his keys, his key card and demanded his credit card number," she said.
"He (the perpetrator) took everything he could."
"I saw him take off," she said.
Inspector Peter McLay described the random attack as uncommon.
"These sorts of incidences are rare," Inspector McLay said.
The man managed to free himself and immediately contacted police.
A series of other, less violent, robberies happened over the weekend.
"Our prevalence of break-ins is continuing to present us with challenges," Inspector McLay said.
"Our focus is to reduce them."
Police are looking for a man of Aboriginal appearance, between 175 and 185 centimetres tall, wearing dark clothes.
Jewellery, cash and a laptop were taken from a Best Street house over the weekend.
Christmas presents and jewellery were stolen from Tobruk Street Ashmont.
A 50-inch Hisense LCD television was stolen from Marshall Street Ashmont; another television was taken from a Edward Street home.
A box of cigarettes was stolen from a Hazelwood Drive address in Forest Hill.
