A WAGGA man who attempted to be a "good Samaritan" was attacked for his efforts, police say.

Police said the 22-year-old man was assaulted outside the Home Tavern on Friday about 9.45pm, after he attempted to break up an argument between two people.
"The victim has played good Samaritan and tried to stop the fight," Wagga police duty officer Inspector Peter McLay said.
Inspector McLay said the man was struck in the right eye and sustained a cut and a bleeding nose.
Wagga police will attempt to secure CCTV footage of the incident.
