Two young people are dead and another two are in hospital after a ute being driven by a P-plater crashed into an irrigation drain in southern NSW, police say.

One of the passengers was believed to be travelling in the ute's tray when the vehicle crashed off the road and rolled several times before landing on its roof in the drain in Leeton, about 55 kilometres south-east of Griffith, at 12.30am on Friday.
Two other passengers - a 17-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man - who were in the cabin of the Toyota Hilux died.
Police have been told a 19-year-old P-plater was driving the vehicle along Petersham Road in Leeton when the crash occurred.
The four friends were believed to have been heading towards the the Murrumbidgee River at the time, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The driver suffered suspected back injuries and was taken to Leeton Hospital for treatment. His two front-seat passengers died at the scene.
An 18-year-old man who was believed to be travelling in the ute's rear tray was flown to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital with critical head injuries.
Police will investigate whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
