Wagga City Council infrastructure service director Heinz Kausche said the roadworks would create a safer, more efficient road.

The $6.1 million deviation roadworks will allow greater access to the Bomen Industrial area, making it more appealing to developers, Wagga City Council infrastructure service director Heinz Kausche said.

Built on a flood plain, Mr Kausche said the road was designed to flood to prevent water from banking up and flowing into other areas.

This development, stage one of the project, is expected to be completed by June 2015.

"(It will) increase the amount of freight that can go in and out of Wagga," Mr Kausche said.

"It will be a safer route."

Mr Kausche said more traffic would be expected to use the road as the industrial area continued to grow.

A T-intersection, perceived to be dangerous, will be shut down during the works, which will see the old road closed.

Eunony Bridge Road will instead connect directly with Byrnes Road, through to Bomen Business Park.

In line with council's view that larger, heavier trucks will frequently use the road, it has been designed to take B-triple trucks.

Mr Kausche said heavy vehicle traffic that currently flows through the city and Sturt Highway could be diverted to this road, easing congestion and ensuring greater safety.

"This is a big and exciting project that is considered integral to encouraging the development and future growth of the Bomen Business Park," Mr Kauche said.

He listed reduction in travel time, engine stress and fuel consumption as direct benefits and incentives for commercial freight companies.

Mr Kauche expected only minor traffic delays during the roadworks, including a speed-limit reduction.
