EXCITING key position prospect Dougal Howard admits he is nervous ahead of Thursday night's AFL Draft but is happy that the wait is almost over.
Howard is one of hundreds of teenagers across Australia that has been anxiously waiting for Thursday night's draft where he will learn whether or not he is headed for an AFL club's senior list.
Howard enhanced his chances with three goals in the All Stars match on AFL grand final day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, then featured prominently in several of the tests at the AFL draft combine.
Several clubs have shown interest in Howard, including two that visited his home in Wagga recently.
Howard said he has mixed feelings ahead of tonight's draft.
"I'm just keen to know," Howard said yesterday.
"I'm pretty nervous, it's been a long wait.
"The nerves hit straight after the draft camp, it's been pretty bad, constantly thinking about it.
"I'm excited as well, but it's all in the balance at the moment."
Howard played his early football with East Wagga-Kooringal, before he crossed to Wagga Tigers and made a big impression at senior level.
After finishing year 12 at The Riverina Anglican College, Howard moved to Albury this year for university.
He studied health and rehabilitation science as well as juggling his football commitments with TAC Cup team Murray Bushrangers, NSW-ACT Rams at the under 18 championships and Ovens and Murray League club Albury Tigers.
Howard is unsure what the draft will bring for him.
"I'm not sure to sure to be honest," he said.
"Any club that you speak to doesn't give much away.
"I'm really not sure what will happen, that's why I'm keen to find out."
Howard has kept himself busy over the last month working on his uncle's farm at Lockhart through the harvest period.
He will take a break on Thursday night to head home to Wagga and watch the draft with his parents, Trevor and Christine.
