This week the Breakers have the unenviable task of coming up with a plan to limit the impact of Sydney Kings superstar, and MVP favourite, Josh Childress.

Childress and the 4-4 Kings hit Vector Arena on Friday night looking to snap the Breakers' win streak at four and knock the 8-3 Kiwi club off the top perch they ascended to last round, on the back of their home win over Melbourne and the Perth Wildcats' defeat to the same club.

The Breakers have been playing some high-calibre defence over that win streak and will need more of it against a player coach Dean Vickerman admits is going to be a handful to contain.

"He's pretty complete, other than the three-ball which is a little bit of a weakness," Vickerman said yesterday. "Out in transition he's kind of a glider - not a guy who absolutely explodes but just takes his time and he's good enough if he misses one, he's straight back at the rim.

"Watching him more and more he's been a real presence at the defensive end too. He's a great shot-blocker and very good defensive rebounder."

Childress has been every bit the success story the Kings were hoping for - bar his moment of madness against the Wildcats when he reacted to a hard Jesse Wagstaff baseline screen with a mixture of petulance and thuggery, copping the most generous of one-game suspensions from the league.

That apart, Childress has dazzled like you would expect from a man picked No 6 in the NBA draft (2004). The 31-year-old played 391 games for four clubs in the big league, his most notable stint coming with the Atlanta Hawks where he averaged double-figures over four productive seasons.

He's still earning close to $US7 million a year from the Phoenix Suns who used the amnesty clause on him in 2012 with still $US20 million owing on his contract. Not bad coin for not playing for someone.

His Kings deal is chump change in comparison but not his numbers down under. Last game out, a 93-76 victory over the Cairns Taipans, he had 27 points on eight-of-13 shooting, nine rebounds, seven assist and four blocks. Not long before that he torched Adelaide for 36 points (11/18 FG), 19 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks.

The man has clearly still got game.

Breakers power forward Tai Wesley remembers Childress too well as a college (with Stanford) and NBA star.

"He was on the video game man, so that makes him a big name," he said. "It's exciting to have a guy of that calibre in this league and a real challenge to see if we can contain him a little bit this week."

That is clearly easier said than done. Childress leads the league in rebounding (10.7rpg), blocks (2.7bpg) and two-point percentage (61.0), is second in scoring (21.9ppg) and is fifth in assists (4.1apg).

It's a bad week for the Breakers to be without the long and athletic Tom Abercrombie - his quad tear likely to keep him out for another week or two - and Vickerman confirmed youngsters Reuben Te Rangi and Duane Bailey will get the bulk of the time on Childress duty.

"Do we double on him at different times? I think there will probably be some post mismatches we might have to, with the size and athleticism he has. We'll just have to throw different looks at him."

But it's not a one or two-man job, Wesley said.

"You've got to play team defence against him. He's tall and athletic, and can shoot and distribute well. As a team we're going to have to be there to help on his drives."
