TALENTED Wagga City all-rounder Josh Thompson has set his sights on greater consistency with the bat as he prepares to help Riverina to an improved showing at this week's NSW Country Championships in Griffith.
Thompson is one of six Wagga players that will head west to Griffith later this week for the three-day NSW Country Championships that gets under way on Friday.
The 21-year-old will pad up for his third campaign with the open Riverina team and will play an important role with both bat and ball.
Thompson proved he is up to that level with a brilliant knock of 69 in Riverina's upset victory over Western Zone on the opening day of last year's championships in Orange.
Thompson has set himself the goal of being more consistent in Griffith.
"Probably just consistency with the bat," Thompson said of his goals for the championships.
"Last year I got a good score on the first day then failed on the other two days.
"Hopefully I can bat with a bit more consistency.
"Hopefully Riverina goes a bit better too than the last couple of years. I'm looking forward to it."
Thompson is expected to either open the batting for Riverina, or come in at the middle order.
He is also expected to be thrown the ball to provide a leg spin option.
Thompson has been in good form this season with the ball with eight wickets at an average of 16.75.
He has 51 runs from four innings.
Thompson is confident this year's Riverina team can rise to the challenge.
"It's going to be interesting, there will be some good cricketers there so it will be a good challenge," he said. "Our team is a bit different to the last couple of years, it's a bit more mature.
"You don't know what the other teams are going to put up, there will be a few good players on the other teams that you have got to look out for.
"We'll go into the first game and see how we go from there."
Meanwhile, Riverina has called up experienced quick Brett Davies as 13th man for the championships.
Davies is a regular Riverina representative that had been originally ruled out due to injury.
He made the NSW Country team a couple of years ago and will provide experience and leadership to the Riverina group.
