THE names of some of Wagga's rugby league greats are set to be enshrined in street signs on land where they left their mark on the football code.

Staunton Oval, named after the late Allan Staunton, who played for St George and coached Wagga Magpies, will be redeveloped for housing next year.
But for more than 40 years from the 1960s it was Wagga's premier junior rugby league ground where some of the city's best players honed their skills, including Steve, Peter and Chris Mortimer, Peter Sterling and Greg Brentnall.
It was also a monument to rugby league administrators, such as Arthur Dixon, a long-standing president of Wagga Rugby League and the Wagga Leagues Club, which owned and developed Staunton Oval.
ASMP Holdings Pty Ltd bought Staunton Oval from the administrators of the financially stricken Wagga Leagues Club in 2005.
A shareholder in ASMP, Mick Neason, said rugby league official Tom Looney and Wagga Kangaroos stalwarts Mark Kennedy and Dave Mulrooney had been asked to suggest street names in the new development.
"Anyone who played rugby league at a high level cut their teeth here," Mr Kennedy said while standing in the middle of Staunton oval.
One name chosen already is Allan Staunton.
A road named Staunton Parkway will run parallel to Moorong Street.
Stephanie Anderson, of MJM Consulting Engineers, said earthworks for stage one of the residential development were expected to start in April next year and stage two would follow immediately.
She said the overall development would comprise about 150 lots and would be a mix of housing types.
Planned lot sizes range from 190 square metres for townhouses to 405 square metres for villas.
There will also be semi-detached dwellings in the development, Ms Anderson said.
Earlier this week, the developers of the nearby former Eric Weissel rugby league oval said they were sympathetic to naming green space in their residential development in honour of the great player.
