A Geoscience Australia (GA) spokesman confirmed the earthquake hit 16km southwest of Gundagai and 3km west of Tumblong about 4.15pm.
"(We have) received reports that people felt strong shakes around that time from around the Gundagai region," he said.
"There has been a history of seismic activity in that area, with the largest being 4.2 magnitude southeast of the region in 1998."
The spokesman predicted locals could have felt the earthquake for up to a minute depending how far they were from the epicentre, based on reports of previous earthquakes with a similar magnitude.
GA received no reports of accidents, injuries or incidents that had occurred because of the earthquake.
The Weather Bureau received reports people had felt the earthquake in towns as far as Tarcutta, Tumut and Oura.
A Gundagai Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed they had not been called out to any incidents as a result of the earthquake.
