Now love her or loathe her, she is still a woman to be admired.
After all, she rose from relative obscurity to become the first female prime minister of this country and it should be remembered that in itself is a wonderful achievement.
But, that said, there is little doubt Ms Gillard polarised the community.
Some thought she was treated most unfairly while others believed she deserved everything she got.
However whatever your thoughts or political persuasion, the ex-prime minister does deserve to be treated with respect.
Unfortunately, that didn't always happen – particularly during her tenure as Australia's top politician.
And really that is a sad reflection on our society today.
To be fair, though, Ms Gillard is not alone.
Tony Abbott seems to be continually under fire for all sorts of reasons and not just his policies.
Again, there is a definite lack of respect for our prime minister which verges on the shameful.
Nevertheless, today, we may get some insight into how life in the spotlight affected Ms Gillard.
She will be in our city launching her book at the Mater Dei Primary School hall.
400 tickets were quickly snapped up so it is easy to see that there is still a great deal of interest in her and her story.
The book covers Ms Gillard's early years, her law career and more importantly her term as Australia's 27th prime minister.
She is being brought to Wagga through the hard work of the Northcott Disability fund-raising committee.
