KEEPING it local was the message behind an annual breast cancer fund-raiser that has gained traction since it started in 2006.

Last Saturday's fund-raiser, organised by local women, pulled about $3700 to be split between breast cancer research and a local woman.
Denise Flack and Jodie Carey first organised the fund-raiser in 2006 after Kerrie Hartley, their sister and cousin respectively, lost her battle with breast cancer.
"It started very small," Denise said.
"It's just lots and lots of fun and raised money for a fantastic cause."
A portion of the $3700 raised from the weekend's fund-raiser went to the Jane McGrath Foundation, while a $1500 cheque was gifted to Wagga's Nicole Burgess, a 30-year-old mother of two who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"We've always liked to keep it local, especially for young mums," Denise said of the decision to donate to Nicole.
"It's to make life a little easier for her.
"When you're battling cancer, everything is so much more expensive."
About 100 women paid their $25 entry to start at The Birdhouse and end at The Home on Saturday, carrying buckets passer-bys could donate money into along the way.
The buckets raised about $360 alone.
Denise said the prevalence of the disease, with three of her four family members including herself diagnosed, ensured the fund-raiser grew each year.
