TWO late nominations from Seymour trainer Gordon Strang has given Murrumbidgee Turf Club a likely field of six starters for Tuesday's $7000 Mountaineer Cup over 3200 metres.
Nominations were extended until 11am on Thursday and it proved worthwhile as Strang came to the party with the nominations of Victorian stayers Grand Dette and Tyira Ace for the Kooringal Stud Mountaineer Cup Benchmark 60 Handicap (3200m).
MTC is hopeful of a six-horse field for the unique staying test after all trainers indicated their horses are likely starters on Tuesday.
"It's terrific to get that late support," MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook said.
"Nominations were a little bit light on early but if the acceptances hold up then it should be a very interesting race."
Sanbrook is confident the race is safe.
"I'd say so, they've all indicated they'd be accepting and if that's the case there will be no doubt at all," he said.
"With six nominations, we can afford to lose one or two and still have the race go ahead."
MTC also received two late nominations for the Coorparoo Park Spelling & Rehabilitation Bragger Cup Class Three Handicap (1400m).
The Bragger Cup is for class three horses that have not won in the past 12 months.
Gary Colvin nominated consistent four-year-old Albykita Magic, while Russell Green added War Horse.
Sanbrook believes the Bragger Cup shapes as an intriguing affair.
"It's shaping as one of the highlights of the day," he said.
"Even though the horses have not won in 12 months, there is still plenty of talent there."
The first race at Wagga on Melbourne Cup day will be run at 1.30pm and gates will open at 10.30am, in time for the first at Flemington.
The last race will be at 4.48pm.
