The kids at the Shaw Street Children's Centre are about to put the adage to the test as they gear up for the Garage Sale Trail this weekend, trading clutter for clear playing space.
Founded by a couple of Bondi Beach locals in 2010 as a way of promoting sustainability and a heightened sense of community, the event has spread nationwide.
It involves one big community garage sale with about 20 sites across Wagga taking part, all trading household items in exchange for cash.
Organisers at Shaw Street are hoping the event, a first for them, will provide much-needed funds for a new shadecloth as the summer heat nears.
They will have on offer a range of kids items such as toys, clothes and furniture and have named their sale "It's a SHAW thing".
Shaw Street Children's Centre co-ordinator Leonie Hinch said the preschool has made the event an exciting family outing.
Ms Hinch said there will would be a barbeque, facepainting and a connection with the nearby Demonstration Gardens.
"We decided to jump on board as a good way of showing that the centre is all for sustainability and to get the shade cloth," she said.
"People will get to know the centre and the fact that we are here and we work closely with the community."
The Demonstration Gardens on Shaw Street will serve as a location for residents to pick out there own treasures nestled among the herbs, succulents and potted plants.
The San Isidore Tennis Club will also hold a sale to raise money for the club, while Brunslea Park will have a street sale.
Wagga City Council environmental education officer Alice Kent said the event reduced waste in an exciting and interesting way.
"The campaign offers our community the opportunity to think creatively about how we can re-use items that might end up in landfill," she said.
"Council is encouraging everyone to think about those in the community who might benefit from your unwanted items."
