But the story, a Foxtrot set to Time After Time at a 1980s prom, was told in such a beautiful way that the judges were able to overlook some technical difficulties for a score of 33 out of 40.
"As soon as she put that dress and glasses on, she just transformed," former Wagga boy Jarryd said.
"We are getting a lot of really nice comments on it."
Jarryd and Ricki-Lee separated themselves from the rest of the contestants in the green room in the minutes leading up to their performance to get into character.
Jarryd said it was probably the most nervous he's been before any show because rehearsals were tough and he knew how good it could be if performed correctly.
The pressure in the green room was also mounting with the unpredicable antics of recently ousted contestant Mark Holden.
"Mark was like that the whole time, it's too hard to really comprehend what was happening," Jarryd said.
Contestants are now focusing on a different type of challenge - the partner switch for next week's show.
Viewers were asked to vote who they wanted as new partnerships and rehearsals started this morning, although Jarryd cannot reveal who he and Ricki-Lee will be dancing with next week.
"The switch brings that stress element to it, it definitely puts a lot of pressure on us," he said.
Jarryd and Ricki-Lee were rehearsing together for five to six weeks before the show started and have developed a chemistry that Jarryd said would be hard to replicate in a week with a new partner.
"It will be really interesting to try and build that rapport in such a short time," he said.
"It will be interesting to see how Ricki-Lee goes with a new partner because we have such a great connection."
