Research and Publish Your Family History Photobook

Thursday, October 30 from 9.30am to noon

In association with the travelling exhibition, A Convict in the Family? you are invited to meet Jane Kelso, a historian from Sydney Living Museums who will teach you the tricks of the trade when it comes to genealogy and tracing your family’s convict history.

Jane will use examples from Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks to teach you how to investigate and interpret historical records to help you find your place in history.

Joining Jane is Libby Jeffery, founder of exhibition sponsor, Momento Photobooks, the who will be on hand to share some of the technical tricks of uploading your photos and publishing your family history in a professionally printed custom photobook.

Capturing Memories round table session: Planning for a project

Friday, November 7 from 9.15am to noon

Do you have an idea for an oral history interview? Have you secured a grant for an oral history project, but don’t know where to start? Bring your ideas and questions to this informal roundtable session and learn how to take your project forward.

This workshop is for people wanting to record the memories of others for future generations, and for those interested in the rewards of professional oral history practice.

Presented in association with Oral History NSW, this free workshop will take place at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site.

I Have Been There: Wagga and its Returned Soldiers of the First World War

Saturday, November 8 from 10.30am to 11.30am

Between 1915 and 1919 hundreds of Wagga men who had served in the Great War came home. 

Many who arrived before the Armistice bore obvious and debilitating wounds, but none who had been in the AIF were unaffected by their experience. 

In the lead up to Remembrance Day, this free talk – presented by Department of Veterans Affairs historian Ian Hodges – explores how Wagga’s returned soldiers made their way back into community life, and how they were regarded by people who had not been to the war.

On Saturday, November 15, the museum’s Historic Council Chambers will host a range of special guests who will share their experiences and culture with you.

Featuring informative talks and panel discussions as well as food, music and hijab tying, come and learn the facts about one of Australian’s most misrepresented cultural groups and find the answers to the question that you’ve never been comfortable enough to ask.
