A clerk by trade, he enlisted on August 14, 1918, and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Barambah on August 31, arriving in London three days after Armistice (November 14, 1918).
Corporal Baker was shipped home to Australia a month later on December 12, 1918, and discharged on March 15, 1919.
Alan had tried unsuccessfully to enlist prior to August 1918, but was rejected (most probably on medical grounds).
