Counting down to summer, Wagga Diving Club members have scooped a bag of medals at major meets to reinforce the growth of the sublime sport in the city.

Wagga Diving Club publicity officer Jacki Jenkins yesterday revealed interest in the spectacular Olympic Games discipline in Wagga was definitely on the rise.

Jenkins said the success of the Wagga divers at meets at far flung venues was working to raise the profile of the sport in the city.

"Diving is really growing in popularity," Jenkins said yesterday.

"The fact that these kids are doing so well is certainly helping."

Continuing a trend that started at the Australian School Sports National Diving Championships in Melbourne in July, a group of Wagga divers performed with great distinction at the Geoff Montgomery Memorial Diving Championships at Lightning Ridge earlier this month.

Billed as City versus Country, the Geoff Montgomery Memorial meet emerged as a sensational showcase for the ability of the Wagga divers, including Samson Lucas, Louis Grigg, Edouard Grigg, Angus Grigg, Grace Barrett and Madeleine Lucas.

Relishing the intense competition, all the Wagga divers collected medals, but Angus Grigg and Madeleine Lucas were the stars.

Set to compete at the Pan Pacific Masters titles in November, Madeleine Lucas made a clean sweep of her four events on the one metre and three metre boards.

Likewise, Angus Grigg won the one metre and three metre events in the highly competitive 12-13 years division.

Along with fellow Wagga divers Grace Barrett and Edouard Grigg, Angus and Madeleine have each qualified for the one and three metres events at the NSW State Age Championships in Newcastle in March and the major Australian Age Championships in Brisbane in April.

For Wagga Diving Club, the flood of 13 medals at Lightning Ridge meet is likely to inspire a new generation of divers in the city.

Jenkins said the club is optimistic of a spike in registrations for the coming diving season.

"The exposure our divers have received is sure to have an impact," Jenkins said.

Wagga Diving Club registrations will be taken at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre on Saturday.
