Just open: Tellicherry.

Sometimes big dreams can be small. The tiny 25-seat Tellicherry restaurant, which has just opened its doors on Military Road in Neutral Bay, is one of them. Ajoy and Meera Joshi, from the award-winning Nilgiri's restaurant in St Leonards; have been planning the diminutive Tellicherry for the past four years. "There is a famous ship, The Tellicherry, a lot of people know that sailed from Ireland to Australia. It sank. We haven't named it after the ship. We've named it after the famous Tellicherry pepper and the food in the region around the Tellicherry township in India," says chef Ajoy Joshi. The ingredient pops up in several dishes, including a fish biryani and pepper chicken dish. "The pepper ripens on the vine. It is like a small berry, the flavours are really robust," Joshi adds. Sydneysiders do not live on Tellicherry pepper alone, so dishes include crab tossed with curry leaf and coconut shavings, and the restaurant is also offering a $16 lunchtime Tiffin Thali].
