MATERIAL is still being gathered for the sentencing of Ken Cannon over the sexual assault of a teenager five months before he raped and killed Sally Jones in 1987, Wagga District Court has been told.
Cannon was listed for sentence in September, but the case was not ready to proceed just six weeks after the 54-year-old pleaded guilty in Wagga Local Court to the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in November, 1986.
The case was listed again for sentence in the October sittings of Wagga District Court, which began on Monday.
But Cannon's counsel, Michael King, told Judge Jennifer English the matter was a historical sexual assault and as a result he was "digging up some records".
He said he had obtained some medical records and was still trying to obtain some other documents.
"It's not ready to go this sittings," Mr King told the judge.
Crown solicitor Rennae Gee did not oppose Mr King's application for an adjournment.
The case was adjourned to the next sittings of Wagga District Court, which start on November 17.
Five months after raping the 15-year-old girl in Bolton Park at the point of a knife, Cannon raped and killed 18-year-old Sally Jones.
The stabbing murder terrified Wagga and focused national attention on the city.
Cannon was sentenced for the killing in August, 1991.
One month later, he pleaded guilty to the knifepoint rape of a 16-year-old girl in May, 1990.
He is in custody until August 29, 2020.
Cannon was arrested for the 1986 rape in February this year after a cold case team matched Cannon's DNA with a sample taken from the victim's underpants at the time of the attack.
