A 121-run fourth wicket partnership between Todd Henderson and Sam Perry was enough to see Wagga RSL over the line in its season opener against Lake Albert.
Chasing 196 for victory, the Bulldogs got the runs with two overs to spare to start the season on a positive note.
Halfway through the innings Perry wasn't sure they make would the total, before Henderson hit top gear.
"At one stage it didn't look like we were going to win and then we brought it back," the captain said.
"Toddy (Henderson) put us back into it, he scored 50 pretty quickly and it was tight at the end.
"We needed 20 off 24 balls at the end and Gage Baxter and Suraj Kandasamy got us over the line.
"It was very exciting."
Winning the toss and sending the Bulls in at the Wagga Cricket Ground, Lake Albert had the better of the early going before Kris Bradbury struck.
He removed both openers, with Jordan Neill (17) caught by Tim Cameron off his bowling, before running out Isaac Cooper for 25.
Lake Albert could only put one more run on the board before Kurt Robertson (27) was caught and bowled by Perry, before Matt Tom and Jesse Hampton put on 62 for the fourth wicket partnership.
Tom was dismissed by Perry for 30, but West Wyalong recruit Hampton proved to be a harder nut to crack.
Unbeaten on 59, Hampton was at the crease for another 56 runs following Tom's departure.
With RSL heads down after being set a big target, it took a while for the Bulldogs to find a comfortable position.
It wasn't until Henderson arrived at the crease did things started to change.
Coming in at 3-49, Henderson made quick work of the Bulls line-up, scoring 72 runs before being bowled by Hampton.
He departed one run after Perry (45), but despite the slump Kandasamy and Baxter were able to get the 25 runs needed for victory.
Ben McFarlane was another of the Bulldogs batsmen to step up, seeing off Brett Davies before falling to Lachlan Bushby for 20.
After a season to forget, Perry was pleased with the team's start in his first day of the captaincy.
Taking on Saint Michaels next Saturday, Perry is looking to use the game as another chance to get just where his team is at this season.
